Difference Between PMAY Gramin and PMAY Urban

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or PMAY was introduced by the Government of India in 2015 to provide affordable housing to the financially weaker communities of this country. This scheme has two divisions, urban and rural. The urban scheme is called PMAY Urban, and the rural one is regarded as PMAY Gramin.

Even though the aim of these two schemes are similar, there are some differences between them.

Differences between PMAY-G and PMAY-U

1- Operational differences

The focus of PMAYG is on delivering affordable pucca houses to the poor and homeless of rural areas. Whereas, PMAY-U aims has four verticals, these are –

  • Rehabilitating slum dwellers with contribution from the private sector.
  • Using Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) for home loans to promote affordable housing for the economically weaker section.
  • Building affordable housing in a joint venture with private and public sectors.
  • Offering subsidy to beneficiary led house construction/ repair.

2- Application process

There are no specific eligibility criteria for PMAY Gramin. The gram sabha recommends the applicant’s names to the board. Whereas, the PMAY-U scheme has a set of dedicated eligibility criteria that one must fulfil to avail the benefits.
